about

Sonic tapestries carved out of sound and circuitry tapping deep into the emotive hinterlands far distant from the cold bastions of our concrete and steel enclave's. Subdued synthetic textures encapsulated environmental meanderings coerce one another within subtle rhythmic oscillations.

Review:

A mention of the name Gregory Kyryluk will usually conjure thoughts of the Alpha Wave Movement style of ambient and rhythmic electronic music. However, with the release of the sophomore album Essence, Biome is set to become a firm favorite in the field of ambient electronic music.

From the very start, Essence creates an atmosphere of floating weightless in space, with electronic string-like sounds creating an environment to enable sparkling streaks to appear and then disappear. Some gentle bell-like sounds will appear at times, tantalizingly close to creating a rhythmic backdrop of sequencing, but never taking full hold of the situation and releasing at just the right time for some atmospheric chords to re-establish their ambient dominance.

The track ‘Walk Among The Crystal Tides’ does provide some gentle rhythmic elements with a subdued but very effective bass line plus tribal rhythms that approach and depart, very softly. Atmospheric pads are also present so that the floating atmosphere is once again continued throughout the track and makes for a perfect mid-point for Essence.

Natural atmospheric sounds introduce and close the final track ‘Shangri-la Nexus’ which again features some superb electronic string-like sounds which this time are joined by vocal pads to build towards a climax for the end of the album. There are gentle sequences here once again, but never enough to take control, with the bell-like sounds finding their place within the ambience of the track, just as they have throughout the album.

Just as each track within Essence has a well-defined structure, so does the overall album have a structure, with each part fitting together into a cohesive whole to make a superb ambient experience of almost an hour. This means that the whole album can be re-played many times, with each play becoming more enjoyable than the last and bodes for a great future for Biome.

That’s all folks!
